Who We Are

17 For Change is an organization that was formed after the senseless killings of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Our organization consists of Marjory Stoneman Douglas alumni, student leaders from High Schools from throughout South Florida, parents, elected officials and people who support our mission. If you believe in our mission, please sign up on our home page showing your support. If you can volunteer in your community for one hour or more at the next election, please sign up on our Get Involved page.

We have formed a Student Advisory Committee which consists of student leaders from many high schools, including MSD. This Committee will direct our issues and platform as we move forward.

We have come to a realization about two things: Many of our elected officials have repeatedly failed us by failing to enact laws that protect us, and we need sensible gun law changes.

We are not opposed to the Second Amendment and we are not trying to take away everyone’s guns.

However, when a person can apply to purchase a gun and the retailer delivers the gun into the buyer’s possession before the background check is completed, we know something is wrong. When a person can buy a gun from an individual seller without a background check, we know something is wrong. When a known troubled 18 year old can purchase an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, we know something is wrong. When certain states fail to provide criminal convictions to the NICS database, we know something is wrong. When 30% of all military criminal convictions go unreported to the NICS database, we know something is wrong.

We will also ask legislators for their positions on our goals. Over time, we will identify those elected officials who do not support sensible gun law changes and seek to have those elected officials replaced.
